Description Extended Information

The Illinois Central was the first land grant railroad in the country.  In 1850 President Millard Fillmore signed the land grant for the construction of the railroad and it was chartered by the state of Illinois in 1851.  When completed in 1856 it was the longest railroad in the country.  Prior to becoming President, Abraham Lincoln was the Railroad's primary attorney.  In 1988 the railroad was purchased by the Canadian National Railway.  Issued in the 1930s.  This unique vignette features a map on the left that shows the path of the the rail lines through the states starting in Minnesota and Wisconsin and traveling as far south as the Gulf of Mexico ending in New Orleans.  Hand signed.
