Description

This rare ribbon / badge from the New York Produce Exchange is a rare find. It features a picture of the Commodities Exchange Building in the round amulet and the New York Sky line at the top. The building was erected in the early 1880s at 2 Broadway facing Bowling Green. The Produce Exchange dealt in commodities futures such as the Wheat Futures advertised on this badge.

The ribbon was made by the Whitehead & Hoag Company of New Jersey which was incorporated in 1892. They were known for making elegant and sturdy badges as well as buttons.

The New York Produce Exchange was founded in 1861 in the Financial District of Lower Manhattan. It was originally called the New York Commercial Association and later renamed as the New York Produce Exchange Company in 1868. By the 1880s it has the largest membership of any exchange in the U.S.
