Description Extended Information

This Shearson Hayden Stone Specimen Stock Certificate was printed in 1978 and features Sanford "Sandy" Weill as Chairman who would become CEO and Chairman of Citigroup. Shearson Hayden Stone's history dates back to 1902 when Edward Shearson founded brokerage house Shearson Hamill & Co. Over the years they merged with several notable companies to become Shearson Hayden Stone, Shearson Loeb Rhodes, Shearson American Express, Shearson Lehman Brothers, Shearson Lehman Hutton, and Smith Barney Shearson. The Shearson name was discontinued in 1994. Smith Barney would go on to merge with Morgan Stanley.

The name Shearson Hayden Stone only existed from 1974 to 1979 making this stock certificate quite rare.

Specimen stock certificates are certificates that were archived by printers and the company as perfect examples of the company’s stock issue. Specimen’s can be identified by their “specimen” stamp, stamped holes spelling “specimen”, or they are often issued with a serial number of a series of zeros. Often, they are also issued with no serial number at all. Specimens can also represent a design that was never issued. All of these attributes make the specimen stock certificate rarer than the issued version of the share. Many enthusiasts collect specimens as a whole new category of Scripophily.
