This Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Stock certificate was signed by Civil War Brigade General Orland Smith. Smith was a commander in the Union Army that took the hill in the Battle of Wauhatchie that now bears his name, Smith's Hill. His men also held Cemetery Hill on the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg. On the second day his regiment helped to repel the attack by Brig. General Harry T. Hays' "Louisiana Tigers". After the war, he became president of the Cincinnati, Washington and Baltimore Railroad and then Vice President of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad.

Incorporated in 1827, The B&O railroad is one of the oldest railroads in the United States was also made famous in the classic Monopoly board game. This stock certificate was issued in the 1890s and is hand signed by Union General Orland Smith.
