Description Extended Information

This Valley Railway Company Stock certificate was signed by company president J.H. Wade (Jeptha Homer Wade) in 1882. J.H. Wade was one of the founding members of Western Union Telegraph. In 1856 he and Hiram Sibley began to consolidate most of the telegraph industry through acquisitions and mergers to form the Western Union Company and would become its president in 1866. He resigned for health issues and sold his interest to Jay Gould.

He would head up several other companies including Cleveland Rolling Mill Company and Citizens Savings and Loan. He would become president of the Valley Railway Company and help the B&O with its takeover of the Railroad until he resigned in 1890. His philanthropic generosity can still be seen in Cleveland today. Wade Park was named in his honor and serves as a Cleveland cultural center surrounded by the Cleveland Museum of Art, Natural History, Botanical Gardens and Western Reserve Historical Society.

The Valley Railway Company was founded in 1871 in the state of Ohio. It was a short line railroad that operated between Cleveland and Zoarville. In 1890 the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O) took controlling interest and in 1895 is went bankrupt and was reorganized into the Cleveland, Terminal and Valley Railway. This company was then merged with the B&O again in 1915.

Issued in 1882 and hand signed by president J.H. Wade / Jeptha Homer Wade.
