In the 1960s the NYSE Department of Stock List employed 72 people and covered around 1250 companies. Employees are divided into industries and each would cover 100 to 120 companies. The Department is tasked with educational functions of those listed companies regarding disclosure of material events such as mergers. They would also review trading activity and price fluctuations of those stocks and look for unusual activity. The Department even reviewed newspapers everyday and refers relevant clippings to the assigned listing agent. Listing agents had the ability to halt trading should an announcement be required by a company.
