Description

During the panic of 1907, many businesses and brokerages began to fail and touched off a panic and crash in the market. Customers made massive runs on the nation's banks and the U.S. Treasury stepped in providing liquidity to banks but fell short of ending the panic. J.P. Morgan stepped in. He called the nation's leading bankers and financial experts to his home. His efforts funneled money from stronger companies and banks to weaker ones to keep them afloat. The cooperation between the government and JP Morgan's private business contacts helped to end the panic.

This coin from the Franklin Mint commemorates this cooperation. The front features JP Morgan and President Roosevelt. The reverse features important dates during 1907.

Apr 26 - Opening of Jamestown Exposition to celebrate 300 years of English settlement
June 15 - Oct 18 - Second Hague Peace Conference
Fall - J.P. Morgan helps avert spread of the New York Bankers Panic
Dec 16 - US Government sends fleet of 16 battleships on a world cruise
