Northern States Power Company’s origins date back to 1916. The company went through a number of mergers and attempted mergers. The company was originally names Consumers Power Company but to avoid confusion with another company of the same name it changed it's name to Northern States Power Company. The company primarily operated in rural areas of Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. XCEL Energy was formed as a holding company of Northern States Power (Minnesota), Northern States Power (Wisconsin), and New Century Energies.

Specimen stock certificates are certificates that were archived by printers and the company as perfect examples of the company’s stock issue. Specimen’s can be identified by their “specimen” stamp, stamped holes spelling “specimen”, or they are often issued with a serial number of a series of zeros. Often, they are also issued with no serial number at all. Specimens can also represent a design that was never issued.
