Description

Pets.com is a perfect example of the high-flying dotcom boom and bust of the late 1990s. Pets.com began operations in 1998 with a massive marketing campaign that featured their famous sock puppet mascot and he was even featured in a Super Bowl Commercial in 2000. The sock puppet was even featured in an interview in People Magazine and Good Morning America. The company went defunct in the dotcom bubble and they liquidated just two years after they began in November of 2000.

At one point, Amazon owned 54% of the company. Their rise and fall became symbolic of the dot com bubble. Their domain now points to PetSmart today.

From the box:
"The Pets.com Sock Puppet was discovered on August 11, 1999. He is a mixed breed, very mixed. Rumors about his formative years including escaping from a washing machine and being dismissed from a Doggy Manner's School. Neither of these rumors have been confirmed or denied."
