Description Extended Information

This rare American Express Company stock certificate was issued to and signed by the founder of the New York Central Railroad Erastus Corning Jr. as well as American Express founders William G. Fargo and his partner Henry Wells (aka Wells Fargo). This stock certificate is an amazing representation of the formation of United State with three iconic companies represented, the New York Central Railroad, American Express, and Wells Fargo & Co.

American Express was founded by Henry Wells, William G. Fargo and J.W. Butterfield in 1850 in Buffalo, NY. Just two years later, Wells and Fargo would also start Wells Fargo & Co. Together they founded two of the most iconic companies in American History.

Erastus Corning Jr.
Erastus Corning saw the need to connect the routes between Albany and Buffalo, New York. In the 1850s he organized the merger of several other railroads to do just this. After a few years of lobbying and dealing, the State Legislature passed the Consolidation Act April 22, 1853 allowing the merger of these independent railroads and form the The New York Central Rail Road Company. Corning was the majority shareholder and was subsequently elected President. Corning served as President of the Railroad for 12 years. The New York Central Rail Road Company was eventually purchased by Cornelius Vanderbilt in 1867.

This amazing American Express Stock Certificate was issued to Erastus Corning Jr of Albany and was signed by him on the back. Henry Wells signed as President and William G. Fargo signed as Secretary. It was also signed by Alexander Holland as Treasurer who was the son-in-law of founder John Butterfield.
