Description Extended Information

After the Civil War, the federal government placed a substantial tax on state bank notes/currency. To circumvent this tax, the State of Louisiana issued these notes with a baby on them in the hopes of disguising them as interest-bearing bonds. These "bonds" were used as currency throughout Louisiana.

To add to the intrigue of the Baby Bonds, in the 1880s Edward Burke the Louisiana State Treasurer, used the printing plate of these bonds to counterfeit them. He was caught with around $300k worth in his safe deposit box. He subsequently fled to Brazil and then became a wealth government official in Honduras. His counterfeited bonds all had the same serial number. These have their own. Sheet of 3 bonds.
