Fortis was a new explosive introduced to England in the late 1800s that was described to be between a low and high explosive and much more powerful than the powder used at the time and does not shatter like dynamite. It was found to be much safer than dynamite and worked well in quarries and coal mining.

Dated in 1890, this Fortis Powder & Explosives Company Certificate is presented in both English and French. It is hand signed and has all coupons 1-13 as well as the voucher for a new series of coupons as well as the talon attached.
